Sadie shuts his bedroom door behind her while the parents chat below. Ethan has waited years to hear what she says next. Her mother wanders through the house asking where she went, and Ethan has to lie with a straight face.
Our take The mother wandering the house is a good source of nervous comedy, and Sadie's softer last line gives the story a pleasant surprise. Short, but it leaves you wanting the next part.

Synopsis

Ethan spent all of college dodging Sadie, the girl who made a sport of mocking him. Then his father marries her mother, and suddenly she is his stepsister, unpacking in the room next door. They share a bathroom. She doesn't lock it. She still calls him loser, still orders him around and still gives him the same withering look. But she has changed, or he has noticed something he missed before, and the sneer is starting to slip. With both parents downstairs and a house full of thin floors, the old rivalry looks a lot like something else. Ethan is not sure whether to run or answer back.

Watch it if...

Watch it if you love a bully-turned-flirt story with a satisfying role reversal. The bathroom setup gives it immediate comedy, and the parents downstairs supply a steady hum of danger. Sadie is cocky and a little vulnerable, Ethan finally gets some nerve, and the dynamic flips in every scene.
