The couple arrives at the lake house, and Veronica greets them with a toast. Dinner is warm and the conversation loose, but when Sophie heads to bed, Veronica asks her daughter's fiance for a dance. It is only a dance, she says, and he can breathe.

Our take A relaxed lake-house dinner with smooth toasts and a mother who clearly knows her game. The pacing is unhurried, and the final dance sets up trouble. A confident, patient opener.

The next morning, Sophie is called away to work and Veronica is up first. She asks Jake to help with a stretch, tells him there are many things he has not tried, and mentions that she is going to shower. A moment later her voice comes through the door, asking for him.

Our take The stretch scene is a patient, well-judged step up, with the mother speaking in lines that mean twice as much. The fiance's absence at work is a handy device. A strong invitation to continue.
