The storm leaves Mia's boyfriend stranded with her stepmother after the drive home. Ms. Dermot gives him dry clothes and a hot drink while the phones stay dead. She invites him to sit closer, saying the blanket is big enough for two, and he insists that he is not afraid of it.

Our take Snowed in with a girlfriend's stepmother is a classic pairing, and Ms. Dermot's calm blanket logic is a good comic engine. Cozy and economical, ending on a deadpan denial that works.

  2. 2

    2. Episode 2 about 1 minFree with an account

Ms. Dermot says Mia thinks he is far too timid to start anything. He protests that she is Mia's mother, but she notices he cannot look away and offers to help him prove his girlfriend wrong. A ringing phone breaks the spell, and the caller is Mia.

Our take The challenge that he is too timid is a neat lever, and the phone ringing at the crucial moment is a classic, effective cut. Slim, but it dangles the paid episodes with confidence.

Synopsis

Mia sent her boyfriend to fetch her stepmother, and the weather did the rest. Now he and Ms. Dermot are snowed into her house with the road shut until morning, the phone lines dead and one warm blanket between them. She is gracious, amused and in no hurry to let him leave her sight. Tea is offered. Dry clothes are lent. Conversation turns to what Mia says about him and what she misses. As the storm builds, Ms. Dermot seems to be asking one question, whether he will stay faithful to her daughter. His own answer is less certain than he would like.

Watch it if...

A good pick for a snowed-in chamber piece with one setting and two people. The pacing is slow and deliberate, the temptation is spoken rather than shown, and Ms. Dermot is calmly in charge. It is perfect if you like a loyalty test that keeps tightening. Episode one plays free, no sign-up needed.
