Jake arrives to meet the family and runs into Dana, who is far less formal than he expected. She jokes about the house rule and hints at a prior introduction to his girlfriend. Chloe confirms nothing, and Dana tells him to come closer.

Our take The house rule joke is smart, and Dana is warm, direct and funny. The girlfriend being in on it is a good surprise. Light on plot, but the tone is nicely judged.

Chloe warns him not to panic and then explains the family tradition. Dana lays out two rules, sets a two minute wait and tells him exactly where to look. He is nervous, she is amused, and everyone seems pleased with the arrangement.

Synopsis

Jake has just moved into his girlfriend Chloe's family home, and day one goes smoothly until he meets Dana, her stepmom. Dana is warm, direct and unbothered by boundaries. She tells him there is nothing hidden in this house, a statement that turns out to be a warning. Chloe, meanwhile, has been less than forthcoming about a ritual her boyfriends have always gone through with her stepmother. Dana sets the rules, the clock starts and Jake is told not to move. By the time the husband returns, the whole household is in on the plan, and Jake is the only person who doesn't know what he agreed to.

Watch it if...

Watch it if you enjoy a story where the joke is on the newcomer. The family tradition gives the premise a twist, Dana is patient and entirely in command, and Jake's growing confusion is great fun to watch. It is playful, rule based and quick, a good pick for fans of sly stepmom comedies.
